Express Postal Markings Postmarks

Under the Blomfield system these marks were classified ExD-1 etc. While reluctant to introduce yet another coding system, the one used here lists marks first under the town name and then by the keyword(s) used within the mark. The town names are grouped under the common English spelling. The keywords give equal weight to Arabic as to European spellings. See views on postmark coding and for visual representaions see query 28

On these pages where a mark has already drawn these have been used otherwise the scanned mark has been used; with a minimal amount of doctoring (removing background to present a black and white image). The hope is that the drawn marks will be replaced by good scans and the poor scans will be replaced as better ones become available. As can be seen, both methods have their benefits and drawbacks but we hope to include as many full scans of the originals, on or off cover, which should make identification easier.

Blomfield's last sheet with amendments consisted only of eleven markings. Now the record comprises of over 60 examples.

Under each mark is the code used which should be used, with the town name i.e. Cairo-D4.k. After the main code other letters represent other words used. Beneath are the earliest and latest dates, if known, and below these comments. If a red arrow is displayed, hover over with the cursor for more information; if a small cover is shown, click on it to see the cover in full size.
